Mock tests are essential for CAT VARC preparation but they are not interchangeable. The quality of RC passages, the accuracy of question difficulty, and the depth of answer explanations vary significantly across providers. Choosing the wrong mock series wastes time and can build incorrect intuitions about what CAT RC actually tests.
Previous CAT papers from 2017 to 2025 are the single best source of VARC practice. The passages are real, the questions are real, and the difficulty is calibrated. IIM Ahmedabad releases official papers and most coaching platforms host them for free. Before purchasing any mock series, work through every available official paper. There are enough of them to provide 40 plus VARC sections of practice.
Among commercial mock series, IMS and TIME produce passages that most closely match the style and difficulty of actual CAT RC passages. Their verbal ability questions are also well calibrated. If you are purchasing a mock series, either of these is a reliable choice.
Many mock series produce passages that are shorter, simpler or more information-dense than actual CAT RC passages. Practising on these builds the wrong intuitions. If a mock series consistently gives you RC passages that feel easier than official CAT papers, the series is not preparing you for the actual exam difficulty.
Never take a mock test without a thorough review session afterward. The review should take at least as long as the test itself. For every VARC question you got wrong, find the exact sentence in the passage that makes the correct answer right and the exact word in your wrong option that disqualifies it. This review process is where the real improvement happens.
GRADFLIX gives you a fresh CAT-style passage and questions every day. Use it between mock tests to maintain reading fluency and question-solving accuracy.
Practice DailyPrevious CAT official papers are the best source. Among commercial series, IMS and TIME produce passages closest to actual CAT RC difficulty and style.
Quality of review matters more than quantity of mocks. 20 to 25 full mocks with thorough VARC section reviews is more valuable than 50 mocks without review.
Free mock tests vary significantly in quality. Previous official CAT papers are free and are the highest quality practice material available. Free commercial mocks are generally lower quality than paid series.
Start full mock tests when you have completed at least two months of daily reading practice. Taking mocks too early without a reading foundation measures your current level without improving it.
