How to practise a CAT passage

  1. Time it. Give each passage 8 to 9 minutes for four questions. Use a timer every time.
  2. Read for the argument. After each paragraph, ask what the author claims and how it connects to the last one. Note the author’s attitude.
  3. Answer, then check. Commit before you look. For each wrong option, find the exact word that makes it wrong: too extreme, out of scope, or partly true.
  4. Read every explanation. Including the ones you got right. If you were right for the wrong reason, you will be wrong next time.
  5. Log your traps. One line per mistake. After a week, one or two patterns explain most of your lost marks.

Questions about CAT practice

How many RC passages should I practise daily for CAT?

Two timed RC sets a day is enough for most aspirants in the final months, plus one long essay for reading stamina. More than four a day usually means less careful analysis, which is where the improvement comes from.

How much time should one CAT RC passage take?

About 8 to 9 minutes for a passage with four questions, including reading. CAT gives 40 minutes for 24 VARC questions, and 16 of them are RC.

Where can I practise CAT RC for free?

Every CAT RC passage from 2020 to 2025 is free on GRADFLIX with every question answered and explained. The daily essays are free to read, and CAT VARC Mock 1 is free.

Is reading articles enough for CAT RC?

No. Reading builds comprehension, but CAT tests specific question types: inference, tone, main idea, EXCEPT and strengthen or weaken. Practise timed questions and read every explanation.
