How to Attempt RC Passages the IIM Indore Way

IIM Indore conducts CAT 2026. Every analysis of their previous papers identifies the same challenge: inference-heavy questions with close options and double negatives. Generic RC strategy, read the passage, find the answer in the text, is not sufficient. You need a strategy built specifically for the way IIM Indore writes questions.

Step 1: Read for the Argument, Not the Topic

IIM Indore RC passages are not information delivery vehicles. They are arguments. The author has a position, and every paragraph either develops, qualifies or complicates that position. If you read a passage about anarchist philosophy and come away knowing that anarchism opposes authority, you have missed the point. The passage is asking you to track what the author actually argues about anarchism: and that argument will be more subtle than the surface topic suggests.

Before answering any question, ask yourself: what is the author's actual position? Not what is the passage about, but what does the author want me to believe or understand by the end?

Step 2: Mark the Author's Attitude Words

IIM Indore questions frequently test author attitude: what the author thinks about the subject, not just what the author says about it. Attitude is carried by specific words: "unfortunately", "surprisingly", "one might argue", "the danger is", "it would be naive to suppose". These words are signals. Mark them as you read because they are exactly what the questions will probe.

Step 3: Treat Every Wrong Option as a Trap Type

IIM Indore wrong options follow predictable patterns. Learning to name the trap is more valuable than trying to evaluate each option from scratch under time pressure.

The Scope Trap: The option says something true but narrower or broader than what the passage actually claims. Look for words like "only", "always", "all" or "never" in options: they often signal a scope distortion.

The Reversal Trap: The option describes the opposite of the author's position. This is common in passages with complex argument structures where the author presents a view before critiquing it.

The Detail Trap: The option accurately describes one sentence or one example in the passage but misrepresents the main argument. The answer is technically supported by the passage but it answers the wrong question.

The Outside Trap: The option introduces an idea the passage does not address. It sounds plausible and related but cannot be traced back to any specific claim in the text.

Step 4: For Inference Questions, Stay One Step Away

IIM Indore inference questions ask what can be concluded from the passage: not what is directly stated and not what can be broadly implied. The correct answer is always exactly one logical step beyond what the passage explicitly says. If you find yourself taking two or three steps, you have gone too far. If you find yourself simply paraphrasing a sentence, you have not gone far enough.

Step 5: Manage the Double Negative

IIM Indore questions sometimes use double negatives: "which of the following cannot be inferred", "all of the following are inconsistent with the passage except". These questions are traps for students who are moving quickly. Slow down, underline the negation, and restate the question in plain terms before reading the options.

Time Management for IIM Indore VARC

In 40 minutes for 24 VARC questions, attempting 3 of the 4 RC passages fully and spending 12-15 minutes on verbal ability is the ideal approach. With IIM Indore's close options, spending 8 minutes per passage is reasonable. A wrong MCQ costs you 3 marks total (+3 correct, -1 wrong). One wrong answer wipes out one-third of a correct answer. Accuracy matters more than coverage.

Frequently asked questions

What makes IIM Indore RC questions different?

IIM Indore RC questions are heavily inference-based with close options and occasional double negatives. They rarely test factual recall. Most questions ask what the author implies, what can be concluded, or what the author's attitude is toward the subject.

How should I handle close options in CAT 2026 RC?

Classify each wrong option by trap type: scope distortion, reversal, detail substitution or outside claim. This is faster and more reliable than evaluating each option from scratch.

How many RC passages should I attempt in CAT 2026 VARC?

Attempting 3 of the 4 RC passages fully with high accuracy is the recommended strategy for IIM Indore style papers. Rushing all 4 at the cost of accuracy is counterproductive given the -1 negative marking.

What is the best way to prepare for inference questions?

Practice reading argumentative non-fiction and after each paragraph ask: what can I conclude from this that the author did not explicitly state? The correct inference is always exactly one logical step beyond the text.
