How to Choose Your Topic in the UPSC Essay Paper
The topic you pick decides half your score. A five-minute method to choose well under exam pressure.
The common mistake
Candidates often pick the topic that looks most familiar. But familiar topics attract generic essays, and generic essays score in the middle. The right topic is the one where you can build the most original, well-supported argument.
The five-minute test
- Read all four topics in the section twice.
- For each, write a one-line thesis. If you cannot, cross it out.
- For the remaining topics, list as many concrete examples as you can in 60 seconds each.
- Pick the topic with the clearest thesis and the most examples across different arenas.
- Check you understand the topic exactly. Misreading an aphorism is the most expensive error in the paper.
Abstract or concrete?
Do not avoid abstract topics by default. An abstract topic gives you room to bring in examples from anywhere, and fewer candidates write it well, so a good essay stands out more.
Practise choosing
Take any year in the UPSC Essay PYQ vault, cover the model essays, and run the five-minute test on all four topics in a section. Then read the model essay for the one you chose and compare.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose an abstract or a concrete UPSC essay topic?
Choose the topic where you can state a clear thesis and support it with the most varied examples. Abstract topics often reward good writers more, because fewer candidates handle them well.
