XAT Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning preparation requires a broader skill set than CAT VARC preparation. The section tests reading comprehension, logical reasoning, grammar and vocabulary, and each demands a different preparation approach.
XAT Part 1 covers three sections — VARC, Decision Making and QA and DI — together in 170 minutes with no sectional time limit. VARC typically has around 26 questions. The marking scheme awards 1 mark for correct answers, deducts 0.25 for wrong answers, and penalises leaving more than 8 consecutive questions unattempted. This penalty makes question selection strategy more important in XAT than in CAT.
RC accounts for roughly half of XAT VARC. Build your RC foundation through daily reading of philosophical and analytical non-fiction. XAT RC passages draw heavily from philosophy, cultural theory and political essays. Reading Aeon, GRADFLIX and similar platforms daily builds comfort with this writing style. Add weekly timed RC practice from past XAT papers.
Logical reasoning is where many CAT-focused aspirants struggle in XAT. The best preparation source for XAT logical reasoning is GMAT Critical Reasoning question banks. GMAT CR tests the same skills at a comparable difficulty level. Work through 100 to 150 GMAT CR questions with careful review. Focus on assumption, strengthen, weaken and inference question types.
XAT includes grammar and vocabulary in context questions. For grammar, focus on subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference, parallel construction and modifier placement. For vocabulary, read in context rather than memorising word lists. Words encountered in GRADFLIX and Aeon essays are at the right level for XAT.
Monday to Friday, read one GRADFLIX essay and answer the questions. Wednesday and Friday, add one GMAT CR question set of 10 questions with review. Saturday, do one full XAT VARC section from a past paper. Sunday, review all errors from the week. This covers all XAT VARC components within 45 to 60 minutes daily.
GRADFLIX philosophy, culture and political essays are written in the analytical style XAT RC passages use. One essay daily builds your XAT foundation.
