The paper at a glance

  • Paper I of the Civil Services Mains, worth 250 marks, and it counts in the final merit list.
  • Three hours, two essays: one from Section A and one from Section B, four topics in each section.
  • Each essay carries 125 marks. Most toppers write roughly 1,000 to 1,200 words per essay.
  • There is no fixed format. The examiner rewards clarity, balance, depth and a coherent argument.

Spend the first 15 minutes per essay planning

The single biggest difference between average and strong essays is planning. Before writing a line, decode the topic: what is it literally saying, what is it really asking, and what would someone who disagrees say?

Then brainstorm across dimensions. A useful checklist is social, economic, political, ethical, historical, scientific, environmental and personal. You will not use all of them, but checking each one stops the essay from becoming one-dimensional.

A structure that works for any topic

  1. Opening (about 100 to 150 words): a short story, anecdote, image or striking fact that leads into the topic. End the opening with your thesis in one or two sentences.
  2. Interpretation: explain what the topic means, especially for abstract quotations. Examiners notice when a candidate has misread the topic.
  3. Body (6 to 8 paragraphs): one idea per paragraph, each backed by an example. Move from the individual to society to the nation to the world, or from past to present to future.
  4. Counter-view: one or two paragraphs that take the opposing case seriously, then answer it. This is where balance is scored.
  5. Way forward: concrete, realistic suggestions, not slogans.
  6. Conclusion: return to the opening image or story, and end on a measured, hopeful note.

What examiners reward

  • A clear thesis that the whole essay serves.
  • Specific examples: a scheme, a judgment, a data point, a historical episode, a thinker. Vague claims score little.
  • Logical flow, with each paragraph leading into the next.
  • Balance: acknowledging trade-offs instead of writing a one-sided speech.
  • Simple, correct English. Ornate vocabulary does not earn marks; clarity does.
