XAT VARC: A Complete Guide for 2026
XAT Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning is one of the most demanding verbal sections among MBA entrance exams. Understanding the section structure accurately is the first step in preparing for it effectively.
XAT Exam Structure
XAT 2026 is a 180-minute exam divided into two parts. Part 1 covers three sections together (Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation) with a combined time of 170 minutes and no sectional time limit. Part 2 is the General Knowledge section with 10 minutes. The total paper has approximately 95 MCQ questions. The VARC section typically has around 26 questions.
Marking Scheme
Each correct answer carries 1 mark. Each wrong answer carries a penalty of 0.25 marks. Importantly, XAT also deducts 0.10 marks for each unanswered question beyond the first 8, which makes question selection strategy critical. The GK section carries no negative marking and does not contribute to the percentile used for shortlisting.
How XAT VARC Differs from CAT VARC
XAT VARC is officially called Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, and it reflects this broader scope. Unlike CAT VARC which focuses on reading comprehension and verbal ability question types like para jumbles and para summary, XAT VARC includes critical reasoning questions that test argument analysis alongside RC passages. XAT RC passages also tend to be more philosophical and literary than CAT passages.
Preparation Strategy
Build reading fluency through daily long-form non-fiction reading. GRADFLIX essays are particularly useful for XAT because they are written in the philosophical and analytical style that XAT RC passages use. Add critical reasoning practice from GMAT CR question banks, since GMAT CR is the closest equivalent to XAT logical reasoning questions. Practice grammar and vocabulary in context through reading rather than isolated word lists.
