- Read it twice. First for the situation (who speaks, to whom, about what), then for the turn: most poems shift somewhere, often in the last lines.
- Paraphrase each stanza. One plain line per stanza. Questions usually test whether you followed the sequence of feeling or argument.
- Name the tone. Pick one precise word: elegiac, ironic, wistful, defiant. XAT’s five options often differ only in tone.
- Stay literal first. Choose the reading the words support before the symbolic one. Over-interpretation is the most common trap.
- Use the five options. Eliminate options that are too strong or that import ideas from outside the poem; the right answer is usually the modest one.

The Lady in the Sea by Abhishek Leela PandeyQuestions about XAT poems
Does XAT have poems in the verbal section?
Yes. XAT has repeatedly included a poem or a literary extract in Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, usually with two or three questions.
How do I solve XAT poem questions?
Paraphrase each stanza in one line, find where the poem turns, and name its tone precisely. Then choose the most literal, text-supported option among the five.
Are XAT poems hard?
They feel hard because most aspirants never practise poetry. With a method and a handful of solved poems, they become some of the most predictable questions in VALR.
Does XAT have negative marking on poem questions?
Yes. XAT gives −0.25 for a wrong answer, and −0.10 for each unanswered question beyond eight, so poem questions are worth attempting with a method.
