XAT 2027 Exam Pattern: Sections, Questions, Timing and Marking
XAT rewards reading and judgement more than speed alone. Here is the structure you are preparing for, and where VARC fits in it.
On this page
The short answer: XAT is a computer-based test of about 180 minutes: a 170-minute Part 1 shared across VALR, Decision Making and QA and DI, plus a 10-minute GK part. Wrong answers cost 0.25, and the 2027 brochure is the final word.
XAT is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur for admission to XLRI and many other business schools. XAT 2027 is scheduled for 3 January 2027, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, according to the official XAT website; check it again before you plan around it. The pattern below follows the structure of recent papers, and the 2027 brochure is the final word.
The structure at a glance
XAT is a computer-based test of about 180 minutes in a single sitting. Part 1 runs for 170 minutes and is shared across three sections: Verbal and Logical Ability (VALR), Decision Making (DM), and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QA and DI). Part 2 is a separate 10-minute General Knowledge section. In recent papers VALR has had about 26 questions, DM about 21, QA and DI about 28, and GK about 20.
Sections share one clock
Unlike CAT, there is no separate time limit for each Part 1 section. You decide how to spend the 170 minutes, which makes time allocation a skill in itself. A common approach is to protect time for Decision Making, which many aspirants underestimate, and to avoid sinking minutes into one long passage.
Marking and negative marking
A correct answer earns 1 mark and a wrong answer in Part 1 costs 0.25. Recent patterns have also deducted 0.10 for each unattempted question beyond the first eight skipped across Part 1, so leaving many questions blank is not free. GK carries no negative marking. GK is generally not used in the XAT percentile, but some institutes may use it in later selection stages.
What VALR tests
VALR combines reading comprehension, critical reasoning, grammar and vocabulary-based questions, and logical reasoning. XAT passages tend to be longer and more literary than CAT passages, and options are closer together, so the work is in separating the best answer from a very good one. Our guides on how to approach XAT RC passages and XAT versus CAT VARC go deeper.
What to do with this pattern
Practise reading long passages under a running clock, not a per-passage timer. Solve past XAT papers as full 170-minute Part 1 simulations at least a few times, so that your split across VALR, DM and QA and DI is rehearsed rather than improvised. Use XAT RC practice and XAT past papers on GRADFLIX for the reading side.
How to Plan Your Time
Since the three Part 1 sections share one clock, decide your order and time split before the exam, then adjust during it. A reasonable approach is to begin with the section you are most confident in to bank marks early, protect time for Decision Making, and set a rule for abandoning any question that is taking too long.
How to Plan Your Attempts
Because recent patterns have deducted marks for unattempted questions beyond the first eight skipped, skipping widely is costly. Attempt questions where you can remove at least one option, and let the first few skips go to the questions you genuinely cannot start. Check the brochure for the current rule.
Common Mistakes
- Treating GK as part of the percentile when it generally is not.
- Spending too long on one long passage.
- Planning time per section when no sectional limit exists.

Frequently asked questions
What is the XAT 2027 exam pattern?
XAT is a computer-based test of about 180 minutes: a 170-minute Part 1 covering Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, plus a 10-minute General Knowledge part. Confirm details in the official 2027 brochure.
Is there negative marking in XAT?
Yes. In Part 1 a wrong answer costs 0.25 marks, and recent patterns have also deducted marks for unattempted questions beyond the first eight skipped. GK has no negative marking.
Does XAT have sectional time limits?
Not within Part 1. The three Part 1 sections share one 170-minute clock, so you decide how to split your time.
Is the GK score counted in the XAT percentile?
GK is generally not counted in the XAT percentile, but some institutes may use it in later selection stages.
How should I divide time across XAT Part 1?
There is no fixed split. Many aspirants start with their strongest section, protect time for Decision Making and set a limit for how long to stay on any one question.
Where can I confirm the XAT 2027 pattern?
The official XAT website and the 2027 brochure. Treat any blog, including this one, as a guide to recent structure rather than the final word.
